Camel Safaris on Lighthouse Beach
To me, the most exciting activity Port Macquarie has to offer is without a doubt its Camel Safaris on Lighthouse Beach. Experienced cameleers will take you on a trip to the Arabian desert, telling you all about these incredible animals, and letting you ride them along the water’s edge! The camels you will meet are dromedary camels, the main distinction being that they only have one hump. Also known as Arabian camels, their one hump can store just over 36kg of fat (which they can then break down into water), allowing them to travel up to 160km in the desert without needing to source water elsewhere. These days most of the world’s camels are domesticated, and can be found in northern Africa, southwestern Asia and Australia. Camel Safaris on Lighthouse Beach is an incredibly unique activity that is both fun and educational. It is a must do when in the Port Macquarie area, just remember to bring your camera!
